race to mars

About 50 years after the Americans became the first to land on the moon (even though some don't believe it) they might become the first to send a man to Mars too.

Now, Mars is a little trickier than Moon. First of all, it is much further away. That makes the mission much longer and hence logistically much more difficult. But also, Mars has an atmosphere. But it doesn't have one of the top stabilised layers called the Stratosphere. This means that the atmosphere is much more turbulent there. So landing can be very very difficult. In 2012 Nasa plans to send a spacecraft there to study the top layer so that the landing procedure, atomspheric conditions can be well understood. This might cost about 500 million!! Is it worth it?

Yesterday a very young girl told us that science is nothing but being nosy. But is it worth spending 500 million just being nosy when there are millions of people going hungry?

I would say yes. Because, even one day of war in Iraq costs the americans a billion dollars. So, if you think of it, going to Mars and trying to find something useful for the human race is worth only half a day in Iraq. Science is not costly is it?

Race to Mars..wonder who is going to get there first? Will it be the Americans, will it be the Europeans?

Well, now that we’re at it, I may as well say that the Europeans are actually in the midst of testing the vehicle that they will launch to Mars in 2011, a 6 wheeler, rover-like robot.

Now is when everyone should go ‘Where where? Where is this being done?'

TENERIFE people..my very own island. Who would ever think that the slopes going up to Teide are similar to the land surface on Mars? High altitudes, extremely dry air, and rocky landscape..ahh I love my island.

I honestly hope the Europeans get there, chances of Tenerife coming up on world news will increase, and that way people will actually know where the place is! To those who don’t really know me as yet, yes, this is how shallow I am.

Go Europe!
